IPCC report: it is ‘extremely likely’ that humanity is to blame for global warming – Guardian 27/09/13

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the expert panel of global scientists, produced on Friday the most comprehensive assessment yet of our knowledge of climate change.

One of the most striking assertions in this report was the news that scientists are more certain than ever that humanity is to blame for rising temperatures. The head of the United Nations’ World Meteorological Organisation, Michel Jarraud, said “it is extremely likely that changes in our climate system in the past half century are due to human influence.”

If people continue to emit greenhouse gases at current rates, the accumulation of carbon in the atmosphere could mean that within as little as two to three decades the world will face a warming of more than 2C, resulting in rising sea levels, heatwaves, droughts and more extreme weather.

Only 12 homes in the UK are benefiting from the Green Deal – Guardian (22/09/13)

Despite 71,210 households having completed the Green Deal assessment process, UK homeowners are shunning the Government’s energy-saving scheme in favour of self-funding renewable energy installations.
Launched in January 2013, the Green Deal was initially predicted to provide 10,000 homes in the UK with financial loans in order to cover the upfront costs of energy efficiency installations by the end of 2013. With latest figures only showing 12 homes to have taken advantage of a Green Deal loan and completed the necessary energy efficiency improvements, the Green Deal scheme has consequently been labelled “overly complex and expensive”.

Does the Green Deal still have a future? Read more here.

We are Biomass Installer of the Year & Commercial Installer of the Year!!

Duncan Renewables has walked away with TWO awards at the prestigious Energy Efficiency and Renewables Awards held at the Ricoh Centre in Coventry. The National awards, sponsored by Natwest and presented by Nick Hewar – Lord Sugar’s right-hand man on The Apprentice – are seen as the “Oscars” of the renewables industry.

Duncan Renewables, the only double winners of the evening, were voted Biomass Installer of the Year and also Commercial Installer of the Year. The panel of judges comprised a range of industry experts who sifted through hundreds of entries to identify those companies that were leaders in the fast growing renewables industry.

The award for Biomass Installer of the Year was particularly significant for us. Biomass has been the dominant technology in the renewable heat market and therefore an area of intense competition. Mark Duncan commented “What makes our business stand out is the quality of our people. Many of our large team of plumbing and heating engineers have been with us for many years and their experience ensures we deliver the highest quality of service. The depth of our current project pipeline and now the award wins indicate that we are v...

Commercial RHI tariffs fixed until January 2014!

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) have announced that there will be no reduction in any of the Commercial RHI Tariff categories until January 2014.

As a consequence of the quarterly Commercial RHI scheme assessments published by DECC, tariffs are to remain fixed at the rates shown below:

Tariff Category Eligible Size Tariff Rate (pence/kWh)
Small Commercial Biomass <200kW Tier 1: 8.6 / Tier 2: 2.2
Medium Commercial Biomass >200 – <1,000kW Tier 1: 5.3 / Tier 2: 2.2
Large Commercial Biomass >1MW 1.0
Small Commercial Heat Pumps <100kW 4.8
Large Commercial Heat Pumps >100kW 3.5
Solar Collectors <200kW 9.2

According to current trends and figures, which determine whether there are to be any tariff reductions in the upcoming quarter, it is likely that we will witness some tariff reductions post January 2014.

This threat of future tariff reductions will only potentially apply to the Small and Medium Commercial Biomass tariff categories. If each of these tariffs were to be affected by future reductions, a rate decrease of 5% for each tariff would be expected to commence from 1st January onwards.

Any future tariff reductions will not be announced until the...
