Cramble Cross (Poultry) Farm
Cramble Cross Farm is a commercial chicken farm producing broiler chickens. Each chicken shed houses 40,000 birds.Duncans were initially engaged for a 49.82 kW PV system on the roof of a chicken shed to reduce electricity costs.
With the introduction of the RHI, the owner quickly realised the opportunity to significantly reduce heating costs and move away from LPG. Cramble Cross opted for the “free biomass” model as it represented a good way to benefit from the biomass technology without incurring the capital cost.
With the high heat demand associated with chicken rearing, Duncan Renewables provided 3 bespoke biomass containers each housing a 198kW Guntamatic Biocom biomass boiler running on wood pellets. Each unit supplies space heating to two chicken sheds. Because Biomass significantly reduced heating costs the owner was able to invest in a further reduction of grid electricity demand by adding another 50 kW Ground Mount solar PV.
