First Quarterly Report for Domestic RHI published – 28th August 2014

Ofgem have released the first quarterly statistics for the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive for the period since its launch on 9th April to 31st July 2014. This gives us the first glance of the uptake of the new heat incentive with a total of 4,961 accredited installations at 31st July.

So far, air source heat pumps constitute 36% of accreditations, followed by solar thermal- at 26%, closely followed by biomass at 24% and ground source heat pumps at 14%. Accredited installations in Yorkshire & Humberside account for around 9% of the total installations.

RHI cut in Small Commercial Biomass announced – 1st September 2014

As anticipated, DECC announced a 10% cut in the RHI for Small Commercial Biomass from 1st October. The new rate will be 7.6p/kWh for Tier 1 and 2.0p/kWh for Tier 2.

Small Commercial Biomass is subject to a 10% cut due to its growth rate being 224% of the anticipated growth rate. This exceeds the 150% growth rate trigger necessary for a 10% degression. Additionally, the total scheme expenditure trigger of 50% was also exceeded due to a 38% growth during the previous three months.
Both of the Large Biomass and Medium Biomass tariff categories have not surpassed their respective expenditure thresholds and will therefore not be subject to tariff cuts.

It is widely anticipated that a further cut will be announced for 1st January 2015 so now is the time to put the wheels in motion for your biomass installation. The October cut has created a small rush on installations but, don’t panic, it’s not to the extent of the solar rush of 2011. However, we have noticed a significant increase in installations and anticipate this gaining momentum prior to January.
