Mainsgill Farm

Mainsgill Farm is situated four miles west of Scotch Corner and is run by the Henshaw family. For over 15 years the business has been at the forefront of the farm shop revolution, picking up a host of accolades along the way including seven gold awards at the 2014 BPEX regional food awards. The business now employs around 50 people and farms over 500 acres with all of the livestock produced on the farm being sold through the farm shop and tea rooms.

In November 2014, as part of a major expansion, Duncan Renewables installed a 199kW Guntamatic Pro boiler capable of burning either wood pellets or wood chip. The system provides all the heat and hot water requirements for site. The biomass boiler has replaced the previous oil system and burns wood chip sourced from surrounding woodland estates, making a significant saving to the carbon footprint of the business.

By switching to renewable energy, Mainsgill Farm can expect to achieve an estimated net fuel saving of £525,720 over 20 years with a payback period of only 6 years. Burning wood chip will also save approximately 95.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide, thereby significantly reducing Mainsgill Farm’s carbon footprint.

Testimonial

“As part of a major site redevelopment, we required heating and hot water to be supplied to four separate buildings including one build-in-progress. Duncan Renewables overcame the challenges involved with such a complicated district heating system and the biomass installation is now working efficiently.

Duncan Renewables were very obliging throughout the installation process, successfully meeting a tight deadline. They liaised effectively with our other contractors on site; including plumbers, builders, refrigerators and joiners, at all hours seven days a week. With the effective team work between Duncan Renewables and our contractors we were able to open our new retail premises without delay.

By switching from LPG to biomass, not only have our heating bills significantly reduced but Duncan Renewables have predicted we will also receive a 22% return on investment. Together with the money earned through the Renewable Heat Incentive, installing biomass will enable us to continue with our business expansion plans in an environmentally friendly way. Our customers are also reaping the benefits as our lower fuel costs mean that we can offer quality products at competitive prices.

We are highly satisfied with the services provided by Duncan Renewables and we look forward to working with them in the future.” Maria and Andrew Henshaw
