DECC closes Green Deal Home Improvement Fund – 24/07/14

Due to overwhelming popular demand, DECC have closed the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund for applications after just 6 weeks.

DECC report that a surge in applications over the last few days of the scheme caused the allocated budget for the fund to be reached. Official figures state that in the last three days of the scheme, DECC received around £70m of applications from approximately 9,500 households, bringing the total value of voucher applications to £118m. With the fund’s budget set at £120m, the scheme was closed to ensure that all voucher applications could be honoured.

The Green Deal Home Improvement Fund was an initiative that was designed to drive interest in the Green Deal energy efficiency financing scheme. This scheme aims to help households in England and Wales improve the energy efficiency of their homes. Launched on 9th June 2014, the Green Deal Home Improvement Fund was expected to last for at least a year and act as compensation to the cuts in some energy efficiency measures, announced in December 2013.

Whilst all applications received before 6.30pm on Thursday 24th July 2014 will be honoured by DECC, the renewable energy industry has nevertheless expressed outrage at the sudden nature with which the scheme was closed. Further criticisms include the speed in which the budget was allocated as it has been deemed ‘irresponsible’ by many in the industry.

Renewable Energy electricity generation increases by 30% in the UK – 31/07/2014

Electricity generated from renewable energy sources increased by 30% between 2012 and 2013 and accounted for 14.9% of the total UK energy generation, up from 11.3% in 2012. The Digest of UK Energy Statistics 2014 (DUKES) published by DECC on 31st July 2014 also shows ‘total renewables’ to have risen by a staggering 4.2% from 2012 to 5.2% of the UKs overall energy consumption in 2013.

Generation by bioenergy sources increased by 24% year-on-year. This growth was mostly due to the recent conversion of the DRAX power station to biomass. The significant increase in the electricity generation capacity from renewable energy sources was further strengthened by the 59% rise (1.0 GW) in solar PV capacity. DECC put this increase in small generation solar PV down to the high deployment of incentive schemes such as the Feed-in Tariff.

DUKES is a annual publication from DECC and provides a detailed analysis of production, consumption and transformation of energy over the previous year.

New online Renewable Heat Incentive calculator – 30/07/2014

For households considering installing renewable heating, DECC have created an online calculator which shows homeowners how much money they could receive through the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme.

By simply submitting a few details about the property in question, the potential payments from the RHI scheme are generated according to the different types of renewable heating systems. Promoted as a ‘quick and easy’ way of understanding just how much homeowners could receive from the RHI, it is hoped that this online calculator will further boost uptake in the already popular domestic RHI scheme.
